Computer Won't Power On

Computer Won't Power On

This article is for desktop and mobile computers only

Please ensure the mains power is working

Check the power is actually working, try connecting a lamp or another appliance that requires power to the same mains power outlet or multi-power board as the computer and confirm it works normally.
Did checking mains power resolve your issue?
Loose plugs are the common causes for such issues.

Computer Power - No Lights or Noise

If other devices work fine on the same mains power socket or multi-power board and the computer will not come back to life even after you have triple checked the power is connected correctly it will require service.

Notebook and All-in-One Computers

These have external power supply units (often called power bricks) and either the power supply unit is faulty or the notebook computer itself is faulty.

Desktop Computers

Traditional desktop computers have internal power supply units. Do not attempt to service the power unit without training.

Other possible causes

Moisture damage
Dropped / impact damage
Power surge damage
Clock battery (old devices)
Mobile device battery (failed battery)

Resolution

If testing via replacement power supply resolves issue, great.
Anything more than a replacement power supply unit requires further investigation

If any of the "Other Possible Causes" was encountered leading up to this event, please be factual about what has occurred with your technical support person and be aware that water, impact and power surges can damage internal computer components and there is a risk of data loss.

All computer power supplies should only be tested by your local computer workshop to verify if the power supply is at fault or if the actual computer itself is faulty
